Genesis 2:15

Called to be stewards

At St Mary’s, we are on a mission to integrate eco-friendly practices into every aspect of our operations.

From sourcing materials responsibly to reducing waste and promoting energy efficiency, we strive to make a positive impact on the environment.

Go Green(er) for Lent

The Lenten 40-day period before Easter gives us the opportunity to reflect on the practice of fasting and commit to giving up something that brings a real benefit to nature and helps address climate change.

Below are some changes you could make that will help the environment. Pick one or two or more (you never know the changes might just stick!

  • It's practically impossible to become totally plastic-free but make it your goal to reduce your use of single-use plastic. For example, use shops where loose fruit and veg is sold, reduce the amount of convenience food you buy, and where there's a choice, choose products with less plastic or more recyclable packaging.

  • Explore the idea of technology-free times or areas of your home. If you're a news junkie or can't resist diving into social media, try switching to ‘airplane mode’ for the first hour in the morning and the last hour at night.

  • Rather than buying brand new stuff, take a look at what's on offer in charity shops or see what's available on ebay or Facebook marketplace. It's amazing how much decent stuff people are willing to give away for free or for very reasonable prices.

  • Start by cooking vegan or plant-based meals once a week and take it from there. As time goes on, see if you can cook more vegan/vegetarian meals and try to cut out as many animal products from your diet as you can. Explore tasty vegan recipes with Meat Free Mondays

  • As the days get longer and hopefully a little warmer, it's a good time to get outdoors to help you connect with God as Creator and celebrate his creation in different ways over the Lenten period.
